The DIN direction is used to determine the opening side of doors and windows. A distinction is made between DIN left (opening to the left) and DIN right (opening to the right).
This is important if hardware components are intended for a specific DIN direction.
However, there are also products that are used for both types of opening. In this case, there are no side-specific features or the items can be customised accordingly (see → Latch direction switchable)

The easiest way to determine the DIN direction for windows is as follows:
Stand in front of the closed window from the inside
Window handle left = window DIN right (opening to the right) Window handle right = window DIN left (opening to the left)
for doors
The easiest way to determine the DIN direction for doors is as follows:
Stand in front of the closed door so that you can see the door hinges
Door hinges left = door DIN left (opening to the left) Door hinges right = door DIN right (opening to the right)
